Why “Mansio 1695”

Mansio, in Ancient Rome, was a roadside station along major routes, offering a rest stop for travelers.
The word mansio comes from the Latin verb manere, meaning “to stay”. In antiquity, this implied a sense of stillness: a safe haven for the night, always in the same place.
It was meant to be a fixed reference point for travelers who often passed the same routes, offering everything needed for rest and relaxation, especially in remote areas where it was the only available shelter.

1695 is the date carved above the large 17th-century doorway we chose to preserve as the entrance to our restaurant.

The name combines these two elements — mansio and 1695 — to represent the story that brought us here, what this space means to us, and what we hope it may come to mean for you.
